Hundreds of transgender rights protestors have rallied in central Christchurch this afternoon.

It follows yesterday’s rally in Auckland, where protestors stopped Kellie-Jay Keen Minshull, also known as Posie Parker, from speaking at her Let Women Speak rally.

There was a strong police presence, separating members of the “Man Up’ group led by Destiny Church Christchurch pastor Derek Tait at the Bridge of Remembrance.

Pride spokeswoman Jill Stevens said “today showed so many groups and people coming together to support our trans family.

Only by being visible and supportive can they feel the courage to be their true selves. Trans lives are human lives was the strongest line today. Christchurch should be proud of itself for standing together in public with love” Stevens said.

Protestors shouted messages of support of transgender people “no more hate” while holding up signs which read “trans rights are human rights.”

The rally attended by both groups was largely peaceful, in contrast to yesterday’s protest at Albert Park.
