Police have issued a warning to students and residents in Riccarton and Upper Riccarton as thousands return to the area ahead of the new university semester, following a spate of residential burglaries.
Canterbury police said they were increasing patrols in response to the recent offending and were urging people to take steps to secure their homes, vehicles, and personal belongings.
Detective Sergeant Steph Trengrove said police were already boosting their presence in key student areas.
“Police are increasing our visibility patrols, particularly focusing on the Riccarton and Upper Riccarton areas,” she said.
Trengrove said officers were also working closely with local community patrols, who regularly monitor surrounding neighbourhoods.
“We also work closely with local community patrols, who monitor a number of surrounding areas,” she said.
Police said the start of the academic year often brought an increase in opportunistic crime and reminded residents to lock doors and windows, secure vehicles, and avoid leaving valuables on display.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour was urged to report it to police.
