Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews responded to two fireworks-related incidents across Canterbury overnight, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious amid warm and windy conditions.
A Fire and Emergency told chrislynchmedia.com there were at least two confirmed incidents in Christchurch, compared to around 50 nationwide.
“One was a small grass fire in Bexley around 10.10pm that took about 10 minutes to fully extinguish,” the spokesperson said.
“The other was a report of smoke in the Westmorland area around 9.20pm, but no fire was located by our crew.”
They said the final number of incidents may rise once full reports are submitted.
“While there may have been relatively few incidents on Guy Fawkes night in Canterbury, we need people to remain vigilant, particularly with today’s warm, windy conditions,” the spokesperson said.
Police also responded to several calls across Christchurch relating to fireworks being set off overnight.
A spokesperson said there were a few reports of fireworks being lit around the city, with most concerns focused on how dry conditions are.
“There were also a couple of reports of people shooting fireworks at properties and cars,” the spokesperson said.
Both agencies are reminding the public to act responsibly and ensure fireworks are used safely as the dry weather increases the risk of fires.
