Police have arrested a man who was being sought in the Rolleston area.

The man was arrested without incident in the Weedons/Rolleston area a short time ago.

Police were alerted to a report of a man in a stolen vehicle in Washdyke at just before 7am this morning.

The man then fled from police when signalled to stop and continued to drive north towards Rakaia where he stole another vehicle and drove through to Rolleston where he crashed that vehicle and fled on foot.

Police have thanked members of the public for their assistance and patience while they looked to locate him.

Earlier, the Selwyn District Council put out a text message urging residents to secure their homes and vehicles.

When Chris Lynch phoned the media communications number, the spokesperson didn’t know anything about it.

A police spokeswoman said “we understand this was a distressing situation while it unfolded but we want assure members of the public there was no imminent threat to their safety.” An update on charges will be provide when able.
