One person has died following a single-vehicle crash in Kaiapoi early on Sunday morning.

Police were called to the scene on Ferry Road about 3.20am.

The driver had crashed into a tree.

The sole occupant was taken to hospital but sadly later died from their injuries.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
