A young North Canterbury racer has secured his first national karting title, proudly representing his local primary school.
Eight-year-old Max Gosling, a student at Southbrook School in Rangiora, claimed victory in the Cadet ROK class at the National Schools Karting Championship, hosted by Kartsport Te Puke on 11 and 12 July.
The event brought together school-aged competitors from across the country, with children racing under the banner of their schools while competing within KartSport New Zealand’s structured classes.
Max, who turned eight in June, has spent the past year competing in the Cadet ROK grade, which is open to drivers aged seven to ten. His win marks his first national title.

Supported by his school and teachers, Max has been able to train at kart tracks across the country. His parents, Melissa and Tony Gosling, say that support has been instrumental in helping him chase his dream of one day becoming a professional racecar driver.
“Max has always been enthusiastic about racing, and we’re lucky that he gets the chance to practise and compete most weeks,” they said.
He also receives coaching from experienced driver Dan Connor, who has helped channel Max’s natural speed and energy into driving within the sport’s strict regulations.
“Having Dan as a coach has made a huge difference. He’s helped guide Max’s development in a way that balances fun with discipline.”
The National Schools Karting Championship is designed to promote motorsport among young people in a safe and structured environment. For Max, it was not just about the win, but also about proudly representing his school on the national stage.
