North Canterbury teen Johnny Kennard has earned a spot to represent New Zealand at the Under-19 Youth World Boxing Championships in Colorado, USA.
The tournament, which will be held from October 25 to November 5, 2024, at the Pueblo Convention Centre, will see Kennard compete in the 70kg weight division.
In a congratulatory message from Boxing New Zealand President Steve Hartley, Kennard was praised for his professionalism and dedication.
“This is a momentous achievement in your boxing career, and it reflects not only your talent but also the unwavering support of your coaches, family, and friends who have been with you every step of the way,” Hartley said.
Rangiora Boxing, where Kennard trains, also shared their excitement. “This is such an incredible achievement and one that wasn’t just handed to him. He has worked his butt off to prove he is talented enough for the world stage.”
With only five weeks until Kennard flies out, his team is seeking sponsorship to help cover the estimated $6,000 needed for his trip.
“We’re putting the word out there for sponsors. If you or anyone you know can help in any way, please contact us via our Facebook page.”
Funding for the event is largely dependent on individual performance, according to Boxing New Zealand. “You get good international results, we then have ammunition to seek individual funding from High Performance Sport New Zealand,” Hartley explained.
