New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Disposal teams are heading to a street in Ashburton.

A police spokesperson said this afternoon Ashburton Police received a report of a suspicious item resembling unexploded ordnance, at a residential property in Elizabeth Street, Allenton.

Police have cordoned the area and evacuated nearby properties.

They’ve advised members of the public to avoid the area while the incident is resolved.
