New Brighton businesses have created a Christmas themed window trail designed to bring families, shoppers, and visitors into the heart of the seaside suburb throughout December.
More than 40 local businesses have decorated their shopfronts as part of a Christmas Window Competition launched by TIDE New Brighton Business Association.

The initiative aims to encourage creativity, lift community spirit, and provide a free festive experience at a time when rising living costs are placing pressure on households.

“This competition is all about celebrating creativity, community spirit, and the unique charm of New Brighton,” TIDE chair Esther Perriam said.
“We are excited to see how local businesses have brought their festive ideas to life.”
The concept is new for New Brighton but recalls the suburb’s earlier shopping era when large Christmas window displays drew crowds to the mall during the holiday season.
New Brighton Mall is currently undergoing a period of regeneration, with new stores opening regularly and major refurbishment work planned or already underway.
Christchurch City Council is also preparing improvement works to update surfaces and amenities in the eastern section of the mall.
“With the new developments planned, alongside an excellent array of existing offerings, New Brighton is looking towards a brighter future,” Perriam said.
Public interest has been strong, with more than two hundred and sixty votes cast in the first weekend.

Organisers say the response shows there is demand for individuality, independent stores, and personal service, with many shoppers favouring sustainable choices.
Voting remains open until Sunday 21 December, with the winner announced the following day.
The winner will receive the People’s Choice Award, decided entirely by members of the community.

Organisers hope the competition will become an annual highlight on the local Christmas calendar, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the village, support local businesses, and enjoy the festive atmosphere by the sea.
The event is supported by TIDE New Brighton Business Association.
