Aranui’s new trial bus service will begin on Monday 31 August, connecting New Brighton with The Palms Shopping Centre.

Route 110 will travel through Aranui each hour during the 12 month trial.

The Palms was chosen as the destination following strong community feedback.

Stops will include Oram Avenue in New Brighton, Carisbrooke Playground, Aranui Wainoni Community Centre, Pak’nSave on Breezes Road, Burwood Park and The Palms.

Labour MP for Christchurch East Reuben Davidson welcomed the announcement.

“It is great to see that the hard work from Pam Williams has paid off and that Aranui will be getting a new bus service,” Davidson said.

“Pam put so much time and energy into ensuring the community voice was heard, and this is a big achievement she can be very proud of.”

Davidson said the service would improve access to employment, education, shops, medical appointments and recreation.

“Our Aranui community deserves to be connected, and this bus service will do that, helping residents travel to work and study in the city and beyond,” he said.

“The bus service will provide a great link for Aranui residents to access the beach at New Brighton, which will be great when it warms up for summer.”

Davidson said residents had spoken about feeling isolated because of limited transport options.

“We heard from many residents who said how isolated they were and spoke of the challenges of getting to the doctor or supermarket. This will make that easier,” he said.

“It was excellent to see our regional council listen to the local community. Their support has enabled this to happen.”

Davidson also criticised the Government’s approach to public transport funding.

“The risk is that with central government walking away from funding public transport, more communities will be left disconnected and cut off from the services they need and deserve,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the bus and chatting with the locals about the difference this has made.” Metro fares will cost $3, or less for passengers eligible for a concession.

Passengers will be able to pay using a debit or credit card, Metrocard or cash. Metrocards are available from New Brighton Library. The trial will run for 12 months.
