A mystery explosion has been heard and felt in parts of North Canterbury.

Residents reported their houses shaking from Woodend to Kaiapoi just before 9AM.

Woodend Resident Georgina Smith said “it was a massive bang and sounded like an explosion.

“It rattled my windows but there was no smoke or anything that would indicate an explosion so I’m kind of baffled as to what it could be.”

Police officers in Woodend also reported hearing the explosion.

Woodend resident Shane Wood sent Chris Lynch Media security footage which captured the loud explosion.

A loud bang can be heard with a long sounding tail.

Wood’s partner was home at the time of the explosion in Woodend and said she was getting ready for the day when the “massive explosion happened.”

“The cows across the road were spooked as they ran around there paddocks and our neighbours has run out of the house to see what was going on.

It sounded like an explosion of some type as it rattled the windows and made the ground shake.”

Sheree Roberts’s step daughter was in Hanmer and heard the explosion.

“She was house sitting and said she thought someone had driven through our fence.”

“WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT?”
