Multiple vehicles have become stuck on Lewis Pass Road as heavy snow affects the route tonight.

Police were notified at about 6.45pm of multiple vehicles stuck on State Highway 7, east of Springs Junction.

A police spokesman told chrislynchmedia.com the Traffic Operations Centre was managing the situation.

NZTA said State Highway 7 was closed between Springs Junction and the Hanmer Springs turnoff because of snow.

The closure was in place until further notice, with no detour available.

NZTA advised motorists to delay their journeys or avoid the area.
