A 42 year old man has been arrested after a firearm was allegedly discharged towards a Timaru property on Saturday morning.

Detective Dave Pascoe said police were called to Luxmore Road in Marchwiel at about 11.20am following reports of the incident.

Nobody was injured.

Police carried out a number of enquiries before armed officers stopped a vehicle of interest on Evans Street at about 3.30pm.

Five people inside the vehicle were taken into custody but were later released without charge.

A second vehicle of interest was stopped on Macdonald Street shortly after 4.30pm.

The 42 year old man was arrested without further incident.

He is due to appear in the Timaru District Court on Monday, charged with discharging a firearm to intimidate, unlawful possession of a firearm and possessing a knife in a public place.

Following the arrest, police executed several search warrants at addresses in Marchwiel.

Further arrests have not been ruled out as enquiries continue.

Police believe the incident was isolated and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
