Lydia Gliddon has been elected as the new Mayor of Selwyn, defeating incumbent Sam Broughton by a significant margin.
Progress results released by the Selwyn District Council on Saturday confirmed Gliddon’s victory.
Gliddon announced her win earlier in the afternoon, posting on her Facebook page.
“Thank you, Selwyn! I’m deeply honoured to have been elected as your Mayor. Thank you for the trust and confidence you’ve placed in me and to everyone who took the time to vote, volunteer, or start a conversation about the future of our district,” she said.
“The real work begins now. We will continue building a Selwyn that’s connected, thriving, and prepared for the future, one where every voice counts and every community is part of the journey. This wasn’t mine to win as an individual, this was ours, from my team to our community. I am overwhelmed with support. Let’s get to work.”
Gliddon also acknowledged those who supported her campaign, saying two women in particular had been “an integral part of our success” and that she would “forever be in their debt.”
With about 85 percent of votes counted, Gliddon secured 15,497 votes, giving her a majority of 11,341.
Broughton received 4,156 votes, while Brad Mannering finished third with 1,450 votes.
