Security has been beefed up outside the Christchurch Justice & Emergency Services Precinct.
The March 15th terrorist’s four-day sentencing begins tomorrow, after the 29-year-old earlier pleaded guilty to 51 murder charges, 40 attempted murder charges and one terrorism charge.
Lichfield Street has been blocked off eastbound.
Canterbury Police District Commander Superintendent John Price said police have been working with other agencies in preparation for the sentencing hearing.
“This is an unprecedented event with a large number of victims and their families expected to attend court. A number of them will read victim impact statements in court or have them read on their behalf.”
“A major security operation has been planned to help ensure the safety of everyone involved.”
Superintendent John Price said “there will be visible, heightened security in and around the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct , including parking restrictions and vehicle barriers in Tuam and Lichfield streets.
“Anyone entering the Christchurch Law Courts will be subject to usual court screening measures and is encouraged to arrive early.”
Papanui and Christchurch South stations will extend their front counter hours until 9pm, and Police are always available 24/7 by calling 105, or in an emergency, 111.
LIMITED COURT SERVICES
From Monday until Thursday, public access to the Christchurch Law Courts will be limited to only those who need to be there for court business and their support people.
Public counters will be closed.
In a statement from the Ministry of Justice, it says those who need to enter the courts for court business, will have to use the Tuam Street entrance.
There’ll also be an increased security presence. surrounding the building.
Some other courts and tribunals will still take place, including Christchurch District Court (criminal arrests and limited list matters) Urgent Youth Court matters (arrests) Canterbury Earthquakes Insurance Tribunal, Disputes Tribunal and Tenancy Tribunal telephone hearings
There are no hearings scheduled in the Family Court, High Court, Employment Court, Environment Court, Rangatahi Court or Māori Land Court.
The Māori Land Court is hosting clinics at Tūranga (Christchurch City Library) each day between Monday – Thursday from 10am – 2pm. This is only for queries or applications relating to the Māori Land Court.
