A large police presence remains in Riccarton tonight following an assault on Riccarton Road.

Chris Lynch Media understands the victim was allegedly kidnapped and then forced to withdraw money from an ATM during the incident.

It is not known whether the victim and the offender were known to each other.

In a statement, police said one person was taken into custody following an assault reported at 3.45pm.

The victim has been receiving medical assistance and police said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

St John said it was notified of the incident and responded with an ambulance but transportation was not required.

A police spokesperson said staff remain at the scene as enquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the assault.
