Hydroslides at Christchurch’s new Parakiore aquatic centre have been temporarily closed after dozens of injury incidents were reported since the facility opened, prompting design and safety checks by the manufacturer.

The slides shut earlier this week and will remain closed until Thursday 12 February while Australian company Swimplex Aquatics carries out quality assurance checks and repair work.

Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox said the closure was necessary to address rider safety and comfort concerns.

“A team from Swimplex Aquatics is on site conducting quality assurance checks and carrying out work to ensure the hydroslides are comfortable to ride,” Cox said.

“This work mainly involves repairing and replacing silicone between the slide tubes, and we are also making adjustments to water flow and timing lights to improve rider comfort and safety.”

The hydroslides have recorded 52 incidents since opening around eight weeks ago.

Since 21 January alone, there have been 45,000 rides taken by about 8,550 riders, with 19 additional injuries reported.

Cox said all slides were being reviewed as part of the process.

“Checks and any necessary adjustments are being conducted across all hydroslides,” he said.

“We have taken on board customer feedback and are working with Swimplex Aquatics to review all aspects of the slides, including their design, maintenance and day to day operation.”

Cox said the council’s priority was ensuring public confidence in the facility.

“Our focus is on making sure Parakiore is safe and enjoyable for everyone,” he said.

“All slides are expected to reopen on Thursday once this work has been completed.”
