High winds across Canterbury keep firefighters busy

Firefighters remain at the scene of a vegetation fire in North Canterbury.

A Fire and Emergency spokeswoman told Chris Lynch Media, they were called to the blaze off Pahau Downs Road near Culverden at 4.45am on Sunday.

She said some fire appliances had been stood down, but a Canterbury High Country truck and several diggers were still at the scene.

High winds had made the fire spread fast, but it was now contained.

An old pub shed was destroyed in the blaze the Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, fire crews have been working in overdrive near Kaikoura attending several weather related events.

High winds were expected to ease this evening.
