One person has died following a head-on crash in Christchurch last night.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Sumner Road shortly before 11pm.

One man was located deceased at the scene.

A St John Ambulance spokesman told Chris Lynch three ambulances attended the scene.

He said two patients were transported to Christchurch Hospital.

One person has serious injuries and another person has moderate injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.
