LPG outage affects 917 Northwood customers, full restoration could take a week / ELGAS

ELGAS crews have switched off around half of the gas meters connected to the Northwood LPG network as work continues to restore supply to 917 customers.

The company expects every meter to be switched off tonight, provided crews do not encounter further delays.

Residents have been asked to ensure meters are accessible, gates are unlocked and dogs are secured while crews visit each property.

ELGAS said every meter must be switched off before the network can move into the testing phase of the recommissioning process.

“Once your meter has been switched off, do not attempt to switch it on, restart any LPG appliances, or relight pilot lights until you have been advised to do so by ELGAS.”

Supply across the network was shut down after a gas main on O’Neill Avenue was damaged by a third party on Thursday.

Fire and Emergency crews were called to the rupture about 10.40AM. The damaged section was isolated and ELGAS said there was no danger to the public.

The company initially closed part of the network before shutting down the remaining supply on Thursday night so repairs could begin safely.

ELGAS previously warned that restoring supply to every affected property could take up to seven days.

The process requires crews to switch off every individual meter, repair and test the network, then return to properties to safely recommission connections.

Customers will be contacted when ELGAS is ready to begin the next phase.
