Brooke van Velden, the Minister of Internal Affairs and for Workplace Relations and Safety, has issued a statement on the Port Hills fires.
“My thoughts are with those who have been affected by the fire in Port Hills, near Christchurch, and with the brave Fire and Emergency personnel who are working hard to contain it.
“This is a quickly developing situation.
“I have spoken to the Chief Executive of Fire and Emergency New Zealand this evening and offered my, and the government’s, full support at this time.
Evacuation centres have been established at Halswell and Lincoln community centres. If you are impacted, please go to an evacuation centre near you.”
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also released a statement tonight.
“Thinking of those in the Port Hills who are currently facing a large fire putting homes and lives at risk.
“Stay safe and please follow the advice of authorities who are right now on deck providing help on the ground and fighting the blaze.
Two evacuation centres are right now in place at the Halswell and Lincoln community centres.”
