Fourteen structures, including five homes, have been destroyed by fire in Kaikōura.
State Highway 1 between Kaikōura and Blenheim has re-opened this morning after being closed yesterday due to multiple hazards caused by strong winds, including vehicle crashes, fires, and downed trees and powerlines.
While weather conditions have eased, motorists are being urged to drive with care through the area.
Eleven firefighting crews, supported by two helicopters, remain on the ground working across multiple fire sites in the Kaikōura area. Conditions this morning are cool with a light breeze, but winds are forecast to strengthen during the day, with gusts expected to reach 60 kilometres an hour or more this afternoon.
A full assessment of the affected area will be carried out today to confirm the extent of the damage. A fire investigation team has begun work to determine the origin and cause of the fires.
An Incident Management Team has been established and is expected to remain on site until Friday.
Fire and Emergency will meet with affected homeowners this morning and will arrange managed access to their properties where required. The area remains closed to the public while firefighting operations continue.
Residents from four properties are understood to have stayed overnight at the Takahanga Marae in Kaikōura.
