A former world cross-triathlon champion is throwing his hat into the political ring, confirming his candidacy for the Innes Community Board in this year’s Christchurch City Council elections.

Matt Clough, who represented New Zealand on the global stage, said he is stepping up to offer what he described as a “fresh, forward-thinking” approach to local governance.

“I’m running because I believe the people of Innes deserve strong local representation, someone who will bring common sense to the table, challenge the status quo when needed, and make decisions that genuinely improve people’s day-to-day lives,” Clough said.

The former ITU world champion said his campaign is grounded in practical, long-term thinking rather than political gamesmanship.

Clough said affordability is a key concern, with rising rates placing unnecessary strain on homeowners and renters alike.

“When the council spends without discipline, it’s ratepayers who foot the bill. We need to get back to focusing on the essentials and stop making affordability worse for people already doing it tough,” he said.

Transport is another area Clough believes needs a smarter approach, particularly around road design and traffic flow.

“Whether you’re behind the wheel, on a bike, or taking the bus, the way we design our roads and public transport matters. I support smarter solutions that improve flow and function, not ones that create more frustration.”

Clough also criticised what he sees as short-term thinking within council decision-making.

“We’ve got to make decisions now that will still make sense decades from now. That means future-proofing our infrastructure, being mindful of environmental impacts, and making smart calls that benefit both current and future generations.”

While new to local politics, Clough said he brings the same focus and discipline to public service that helped him succeed in international sport.

“I’m not here to play politics. I’m here because I care about this place and the people in it. I want to bring practical thinking, long-term vision, and a bit of fresh energy to the Community Board.”
