The Christchurch City Missioner says the organisation has seen a “massive increase” in demand for its services.

Missioner Matthew Mark told Chris Lynch on Newstalk ZB on Monday, they’ve seen a 160 percent increase at the food bank.

He said thanks the community, the Mission had been able to meet those needs.

Missioner Mark says the organisation saw a massive spike during the lockdown period, and while that’s levelled off, demand for services is much higher than before lockdown.

Those seeking drug and alcohol counselling had tripled in the past year and those seeking financial and budgeting services had also tripled.

Missioner Mark said the increasing demand is directly related to the fallout of Covid19.

He said for many of us, we probably underestimate the impact on people’s wellness.

“Many people are feeling uncertain, and that creates a lot of anxiety.”
