Volunteer fire crews from across the South Island gathered at Dudley Park in Rangiora for the United Fire Brigades Association South Island Waterway Challenge.
Held on a warm Canterbury day on Saturday, the event drew volunteer brigades from throughout the region, with teams racing against the clock in simulated waterway scenarios designed to reflect real life emergencies.
Crews were required to deploy hoses, establish a water supply and hit designated targets under pressure, all while working in tight formations where seconds made the difference.
Competitors described the runs as physically demanding, with some of the longest distances of the day testing energy and endurance.
For many involved, the event was as much about community as competition.
Organisers said the challenge provided an opportunity for brigades to come together, share camaraderie and engage in friendly rivalry, while also practising skills they rely on to protect their communities.
The host brigade said it was proud to welcome crews from across the South Island, describing the day as a special occasion and a celebration of the long history of fire brigade competitions within the United Fire Brigades Association.
