This Sunday, families in Christchurch can enjoy a day of fun and learning at the World Rivers Day event, taking place along the North Frame, near the Margaret Mahy Playground.
With free activities for all ages, the event promises live entertainment, food trucks, games, and educational experiences about the city’s waterways.
Hosted by the Ōtākaro Avon and Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Care Networks, with support from the Community Waterways Partnership and Environment Canterbury, the event aims to raise awareness about Christchurch’s rivers and how the community can help protect them.
Attendees can explore the Ōtākaro Orchard, with guided tours of the building and food forest scheduled throughout the day.
Organisers said it is an opportunity for the community to celebrate and learn about local rivers while enjoying fun activities.
Kids can look forward to a dedicated zone with face painting, live eels and invertebrates, kayaking, waka rides, and much more.
Hayley Guglietta from the Avon Ōtākaro Network said, “It is looking like a sunny day to come and chill by the band rotunda, listen to the awesome tunes of Adam McGrath & the Roaring Days, with Lisa Tui kicking things off.
Bring the kids into the city for a fun day out at our event, then pop across to Margaret Mahy while you’re there.”
More than 20 organisations will be participating, including the Ōpawaho Heathcote River Network, Estuary Trust, and CHCH Envirokids.
The event runs from 10am to 2pm and promises to be an exciting and educational day for families.
