Emergency services have been called to clear a number of trees blocking Christchurch Akaroa Road between Little River and Cooptown.

The incident was reported just after 5pm, near Puaha Road and Harmans Track.

A crew from the Little River Volunteer Fire Brigade has been sent to the scene.

MetService meteorologist John Law said a strong wind warning remained in effect for Banks Peninsula, with a windy night also forecast for Christchurch.

A local farmer said long queues had formed along Christchurch Akaroa Road.
