Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger has slammed claims he is open to selling all or part of Lyttelton Port, calling the accusations false, politically driven, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.

The mayor responded following renewed accusations by left-leaning partisan groups and unions, who suggested he was considering a partial sale of the strategic regional asset.

In a statement to chrislynchmedia.com he said “I have no plans to support any sale of Lyttelton Port.”

“I have said this time and time again. This includes any partial sale. It is a strategic asset for our region. It is disappointing that people are misinterpreting my position for politicking.”

Mauger said the ongoing misinformation was not only wrong but dangerous.

“I’ve been clear on this issue for a long time. It’s disappointing to see some trying to play politics with it, especially when the livelihoods of port workers and their families are at stake. That’s why I front-footed this again today. People deserve certainty, not political games.”

The mayor said his focus remained on improving the port’s operations, safety and long-term value for the region.

“The port needs to focus on unlocking economic growth for our region by lifting performance and improving health and safety. I have full confidence in Christchurch City Holdings, who oversee the port on behalf of the people of Christchurch. They’ve assured us they’re working hard to improve operations, and I back them to do that.”

He also addressed claims that port operations could be leased to a third party.

“There’s also a daft rumour going around about leasing out port operations. I don’t know where that’s come from,  it’s simply not true. Any commentary suggesting I’m pushing for that is just mudraking. It’s incredibly disappointing and not helpful, especially when the city needs the port to succeed and grow.”

Mauger said political interference was undermining the port’s workforce and reputation.

“Playing politics with people’s livelihoods is unacceptable. It’s appalling behaviour.”
