Fire and Emergency crews have dealt with 11 vegetation fires across the Canterbury Fire District over a busy day.

Canterbury Fire and Emergency said the fires varied in size and complexity but were all contained and extinguished.

Crews have returned to a fire in Rotherham today to put out remaining hotspots. At its peak, the response included 20 fire appliances, a command unit and 3 helicopters.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said aircraft were also redeployed to fires in Cheviot and Kaikoura.

Fire and Emergency thanked the public for following advice not to light fires over the weekend, saying dry conditions were enough to keep crews busy.
