A police spokeswoman said the crash involved a car and a bus.
However, a witness at the scene said they could only see a “smashed up” car.
One person was extricated from their vehicle.
A St John spokeswoman said they responded to the incident in Hornby at 406pm.
“We’re still on the scene with one rapid response vehicle and one ambulance.”
One patient is in a moderate condition and will be transported to Christchurch public hospital.
Police are also at the scene.
Traffic is still moving, but motorists should expect details due to a lane drop.
