Heinz Wattie’s has announced proposed changes to its New Zealand operations that could see a manufacturing facility in Christchurch close as the company shifts its focus to long-term strategy.

The proposal includes plans to discontinue the sale and production of frozen vegetables, Gregg’s coffee, and dips sold under the Mediterranean, Just Hummus and Good Taste Company brands.

If confirmed, the changes would lead to the closure of three manufacturing sites in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Around 350 roles across the country are expected to be affected by the proposal, though the final number will be confirmed following consultation with staff and consideration of potential redeployment opportunities.

A former employee told chrislynchmedia.com staff at Wattie’s Christchurch have been informed the company plans to close its Hornby site following a poor pea season and declining profits.

The former worker said many employees have worked at the site for more than 20 years and have been given a two-week consultation period, with the plant expected to close after the carrot season.

“It’s very sad for the people out there, particularly older workers who may struggle to find new jobs. I think there needs to be some public awareness to ensure they’re supported through the process,” they said.

Heinz Wattie’s Managing Director Andrew Donegan said the company was conscious of the impact the proposal could have on workers, their families and the communities where the company has long operated.

“We are deeply aware of the impact this would have on our people, their families, our growers and suppliers, and the communities we have been part of for many years,” Donegan said.

“These are people who have helped build this business over decades, and our priority now is supporting them.”

Donegan said the decision had not been taken lightly, with the company exploring numerous alternatives before beginning the consultation process.

The proposed changes come amid increasing pressure on manufacturers in New Zealand, including rising costs and global inflation. Heinz Wattie’s said it will continue to work with employees, unions, growers, suppliers and retail partners during the consultation period before any final decisions are made.
