A new pre booked shuttle bus service has been announced to help move people to and from events at One New Zealand Stadium.

Metro said its Event Direct service would collect passengers from 11 locations around Christchurch and take them directly to Latimer Square and Ara, both a short walk from the stadium.

Canterbury Regional Council Public Transport Core Service Lead Councillor Joe Davies said the initiative was designed to help support a growing region.

“Introducing this event focused service reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting a well connected and thriving region through public transport,” Davies said.

The shuttle service will require passengers to book in advance online to guarantee a seat.

Public transport general manager Stewart Gibbon said the service was intended to offer eventgoers a reliable way to travel to the stadium.

“The booking system is set to be live by early April, allowing customers time to book shuttles ahead of the stadium’s opening events later that month,” Gibbon said.

“The shuttles are a pre booked service, so it’s essential eventgoers book online ahead of events in order to guarantee their space on board.”

Metro said spaces on the shuttles would be limited and encouraged people to also consider other transport options such as existing bus routes, cycling, walking, scootering or carpooling.

The Metro network will continue operating on normal timetables. However, routes servicing the bus interchange may face heavy demand following major events.

An early bird discount of 20 percent will be available, reducing the price to $4.80 one way or $9.60 return.

Children under 2 will be able to travel free if seated on a caregiver’s lap. Prams must be folded for the journey.

Metro said the service would be reviewed over time and pick up and drop off locations may change, with confirmed locations listed through the booking system.

More information about Event Direct is available on the Metro website.
