Christchurch is set to thrill motorsports fans with the inaugural Super Sprint, taking place at Euromarque Raceway from Friday to Sunday.

he event, which marks a significant moment for the city, promises an action-packed weekend with six racing events and various community-focused activities including appearances by drivers and their vehicles throughout the city.

Super Sprint NZ Director Brendon White said “it’s both an honour and a privilege to hold our first Christchurch race meet this week.

“Motorsport has an incredibly rich history in Christchurch over the past century. We’re overwhelmingly proud to bring the new generation F1 hopefuls and the first ever trans-Tasman V8 TA2 Muscle Car challenge to Cantabrians.”

The event pays homage to Christchurch’s longstanding relationship with motorsport, dating back to the first New Zealand Championship Road Race in 1949.

Prominent figures like Sir Henry Wigram have contributed significantly to this legacy, with the Lady Wigram trophy, won by legends such as Jim Clark and Bruce McLaren, symbolizing the city’s racing heritage.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, a memorial lap and a commemorative tree planting at the Lady Wigram Retirement Village will honour the event’s return to Christchurch, with senior residents sharing memories of the early races.

The community engagement activities will kick off with a warm welcome from Ngai Tūāhuriri at Tuahiwi Marae, followed by visits to local schools, culminating in a Meet & Greet event on Oxford Terrace, where the public can interact with the drivers and their vehicles.

Additionally, a special unveiling of a world-first motorsport project is scheduled, showcasing Christchurch’s innovative spirit.
