A St Albans resident has spoken about being the first on the scene of a serious crash, which forced the closure a street for several hours.
A man was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after his motorcycle collided with a car on Caledonian Road just after 3.53pm.
A resident who was outside her house at the time of the crash said she heard “ an extremely loud crash.”
“I sprinted out to find a man limp on the road about two metres from his motorcycle and it was obvious he had hit a car, especially from how loud the sound was.”
“However I couldn’t see a vehicle anywhere that could have been involved. I ran straight to the man who was unresponsive for approximately 15 seconds. I was saying things like “can you hear me.”
The resident said he had blood coming from his mouth.
“Another person in a car pulled up so I yelled for them to call the ambulance. I continued to poke him and talk to him to try and stimulate a response.”
“By this point, people had stopped to help. He was eventually able to tell us his name and that he had a wife who would be worried sick.”
The resident said “the man was 72.
“I stuck by him until the ambulance arrived 7-8 minutes after I got to him. He appeared to have broken ribs. By the time the paramedics got him into the ambo, it seemed as though he would be okay, but had serious injuries.”
“After the ambulance arrived, a lady emerged from a parked car 50 meters from the accident site with glass in her hair and a small scratch on her face. She was checked over and was fine.”
“One thing I did find odd was that she took over 8 minutes to come and check that everything was okay. She appeared to be in her late 30s to early 40s. The lady’s car door was impacted.
“When I spoke to police, they said it was inconclusive as to who was at fault.”
The serious crash unit attended the scene.
A police spokesperson said they’re still investigating the cause of the crash.
