Christchurch families will be able to step into the worlds of Antarctica and aerospace this weekend at a free, family-friendly event filled with hands-on activities, science demonstrations, and live talks.
Explorers’ Day: Ice and Sky will be held on Saturday, from 10am to 3pm at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, 27 Harvard Avenue, Wigram.
The event, hosted by Gateway to Antarctica Christchurch and the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, will feature immersive Antarctic experiences, polar tents, and virtual reality headsets showcasing icy landscapes and wildlife.
Visitors will be able to meet real-life explorers, pilots, and scientists who will share stories about landing aircraft in Antarctica and the challenges of working in extreme conditions. There will also be rocketry and aerospace displays, space memorabilia, and activities highlighting Canterbury’s growing role in the global aerospace sector.
Organisers said the day will offer something for everyone, from penguin surveys and Antarctic quizzes to colouring stations, augmented reality apps, and competitions for children.

Artefacts and cultural displays from New Zealand, China, and other nations involved in polar research will also be featured, highlighting the international importance of Antarctic science.
The event is free to attend, with all ages welcome.
