The National Party has named Alexandra Davids as its candidate for Christchurch East ahead of the 2026 general election.
Davids is a Christchurch community board member who has served three terms in local government, including as chair of the Linwood Central Heathcote Community Board.
“I am proud to be selected to campaign for a National Party that is fixing the basics and building the future,” she said.
She pointed to the Government’s fiscal approach as a key reason for standing.
“The National led Government has reigned in wasteful spending, saving taxpayers $43 billion to date which has brought down inflation and interest rates saving Kiwis as much as $10,000 on their mortgage,” she said.
“Those savings will be helping Cantabrians in the wake of higher fuel prices due to the war in Iran.”
She also referenced targeted support measures aimed at easing cost pressures.
“Timely, temporary and targeted support is ensuring those most in need receive relief while maintaining fiscal responsibility,” she said.
“143,000 working families are getting a $50 per week boost until fuel prices return to normal and care and support workers are receiving a 30 per cent increase to their mileage costs.”
She said her focus would be on representing the electorate.
“Christchurch East deserves a representative that will deliver for them, which is why I will be working hard to earn the privilege of being the next Christchurch East MP and to re elect a National Government,” she said.
Her background also includes roles in environmental advocacy and frontline support work assisting families in crisis.
