North Avon Christchurch BMX has received a $6,333 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust to support essential infrastructure for the BMXNZ South Island Titles in 2026.
The funding will help the club deliver the event safely and professionally without increasing rider entry fees.
Club President Mark Lewis said the South Island Titles is a “rare and significant opportunity,” attracting more than 300 riders and over 500 spectators per day.
“NZCT’s support means we can meet hosting requirements without making participation unaffordable for many,” he said.
The grant will cover costs for portable toilets, waste management, marquees, portacoms, and a PA system, all required under BMXNZ’s hosting agreement.

Riders say the event is a major boost for their confidence and ambitions.
Cassien Lewis, a 17–24 female category competitor, said racing at her home track will prepare her for the Oceania Championships and World titles next year.
Veteran rider Rick Houghton said the event motivated him to return to racing and train more, while young club member Liam Ross said it inspired him to aim for his first international race.
NZCT’s General Manager of Grants, Marketing and Communications, Ben Hodges, said the organisation is proud to support the event.
“We’re helping expose a new generation of Cantabrians to the thrill of BMX racing,” he said, noting that NZCT funding comes from partnerships with local hospitality venues through their responsible gaming lounges.
The 2026 South Island Titles are expected to showcase Christchurch as a premier BMX destination, boost local economic activity, and encourage riders of all ages to get involved.
