Christchurch Airport has won two awards at the 2026 NZ Airports Awards, taking out Large Airport of the Year and Sustainability Initiative of the Year.
The awards were announced at the NZ Airports Hui in Wellington, with the sustainability award recognising the Kōwhai Park solar farm, developed in collaboration with Lightsource bp and Contact Energy.
The airport welcomed 6.85 million passengers over the past year, secured new international services and completed several major infrastructure and terminal projects.
Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson said the award was a proud moment for the airport.
“What makes this award particularly special is that it recognises the collective effort of our people and the many partners who help keep our airport running every day.”
Developments during the year included the opening of an expanded freight apron, upgrades to the terminal’s food and beverage outlets, retail and passenger facilities, and completion of the Kōwhai Park solar farm.
The airport also expanded its domestic and international network and strengthened airline partnerships.
Watson said the awards had significance beyond the airport.
“We’re ambitious about what our airport can achieve, and this recognition tells us we’re heading in the right direction. It’s also a win for Christchurch and the South Island.
“Our success is about more than running a great airport. It’s about connecting our region to the world and creating opportunities for the communities we serve.”
