Patients face lengthy waits at Christchurch’s 24 Hour Surgery on Madras Street on Tuesday, with the facility experiencing unusually high demand throughout the day.

A spokesperson said large numbers of people had been arriving for treatment, resulting in longer wait times for non-urgent patients.

“We currently have high numbers of people coming in to the 24 Hour Surgery, which will result in longer wait times for non-urgent patients.

All patients are triaged to assess their care needs, and patients whose needs are urgent will be seen with priority,” the spokesperson said.

Residents shared their frustration as queues grew.

At 6pm, one Christchurch resident told chrislynchmedia.com there were “insane 79 people waiting at the Bealey Ave after hours because no one can get GP appointments. My husband has been waiting here since 11.45am.”

Another resident said her two-year-old grandson went in at midday and was not seen until 7pm.

By 10pm, the surgery advised the public that wait times for non-urgent patients had stretched to five hours.

People needing health advice were urged to call HealthLine on 0800 611 116, request a call at healthapp.healthy.org.nz, or consider a telehealth consultation through practiceplus.nz, which often offers same day appointments.

Information on other healthcare options is also available at yourbestcare.co.nz.

In emergencies, patients should call 111 or go directly to the Christchurch Hospital emergency department.
