Thousands of people gathered in Central Christchurch on Sunday to celebrate Chinese New Year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Horse with a colourful and energetic parade through Victoria Square.
The South Island’s longest dragon arrived in the city, winding its way through the square as crowds packed the streets to catch a glimpse.
Families lined the square, many holding up phones to capture the moment as the massive dragon soared and dipped above the crowd.
Traditional Chinese dancers performed lively routines, dressed in bright costumes with flowing fabrics that shimmered in the afternoon light.
Musicians beat large drums in steady rhythm, the sound echoing across the square and adding to the festive atmosphere.
The parade brought together people of all backgrounds, turning Victoria Square into a sea of colour, movement and sound. Children waved, performers smiled, and the dragon’s long body rippled through the air as it moved through the heart of the city.
The celebration marked the official start of the Lunar New Year in Christchurch, with organisers welcoming the community to join in the festivities and usher in the Year of the Horse.
