A person has died after a vehicle went into the Aorere River near the Golden Bay township of Collingwood.

Emergency services were called to Ferntown Bridge on Collingwood Puponga Main Road about 4pm today after a single vehicle crash.

A police spokesman said one person was found in a serious condition.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, they died at the scene.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and expect delays.
