A car collided with the Coastal Pacific train at the Doubledays Road level crossing near Kaiapoi on Wednesday evening.
A police spokeswoman told Chris Lynch Media the crash was reported about 6.20pm.
A person suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
The train, which was travelling to Christchurch, was delayed while emergency services responded to the scene.

Head of Fleet Operations for Great Journeys NZ John Mills said the service was held in place until the site was cleared, with staff caring for the 34 passengers onboard.
“Emergency services attended, and our staff have been offered support,” Mills said.
He said the train arrived back in Christchurch at 8.40pm, and any further comment should come from Police.
