A busy run of major events has prompted warnings for motorists across Canterbury, with increased congestion expected and heavy rain forecast to add further pressure on the region’s road network.
Transport officials said more vehicles would be on the roads over the next few days as large scale events draw crowds into North Canterbury and Christchurch.
An NZ Transport Agency spokesperson said drivers should expect delays and plan ahead, particularly during peak travel times.
“With multiple events taking place across Canterbury, traffic volumes will be higher than usual. People should allow extra time for their journeys, drive to the conditions, and consider delaying travel where possible,” the spokesperson said.
In North Canterbury, the Muscle Car Madness event has brought an influx of visitors, with a twilight cruise scheduled for Thursday evening.
The convoy of classic cars, hot rods, and vintage vehicles is due to travel from Rangiora to Kaiapoi and back to Rangiora from about 7pm. Roads along the route, including State Highway 71 and Lineside Road, are expected to be heavily congested as spectators line the streets.
Motorists not involved in the event have been urged to avoid the area or delay travel during the cruise period.
Traffic volumes are also expected to remain elevated across North Canterbury through the weekend as Muscle Car Madness events continue.
In Christchurch, thousands are expected to attend Ed Sheeran concerts at Apollo Projects Stadium on Saturday and Sunday nights.
The NZ Transport Agency spokesperson said roads around the stadium would be particularly busy, including State Highways 73, 75, and 76, with increased traffic also expected on State Highway 1 as people travel into the city from out of town.
“Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early and consider alternatives to driving due to congestion and limited parking near the venue,” the spokesperson said.
Gates for both concerts open at 4pm.
Drivers have also been warned that forecast heavy rain could worsen congestion and affect travel conditions across the region over the coming days.
