A bomb squad unit has been called to a property in Fendalton after police said an item of concern was discovered.

A police spokesman told chrislynchmedia.com the item was located this morning and officers were called to the address off Fendalton Road at 8.45am.

It is understood an old hand grenade was found.

A small lane was blocked off by police while New Zealand Defence Force explosive experts assessed the item.

The police spokesman said there was not believed to be any immediate threat or danger.

Fendalton Road remained open and traffic was free flowing.
