The body of an infant has been found on the side of a road in Blenheim, and police say they are extremely concerned for the welfare of the mother and wider family.
A machinery operator discovered the body on Wairau Bar Road just before 1:30pm yesterday, prompting a police response and scene examination.
Wairau Bar Road has since reopened to the public.
Inspector Simon Feltham, Marlborough Area Commander, said police were continuing to make enquiries to determine the circumstances in which the body came to be at the location.
“As part of our enquiries, we are extremely concerned about the welfare of the mother and wider family of this infant,” Feltham said.
“Police would like to speak with them as soon as possible to ensure they receive the support that they require at this time.”
