Arts Centre director Philip Aldridge,is critically unwell and unable to return to work.

Chair Stella Ward said the organisation had been advised of Aldridge’s condition and was now making arrangements to ensure continuity of leadership.

“This is devastating news for everyone who knows and has worked with Philip,” Ward said.

“The Board is working through the necessary leadership transition arrangements to ensure continuity for the organisation and will communicate interim arrangements as soon as they are confirmed.”

Aldridge has been a prominent figure in Christchurch’s arts community for more than two decades.

He became director of The Arts Centre in July 2018 after serving for 13 years as chief executive of The Court Theatre.

Following the February 2011 earthquake, Aldridge helped lead The Court Theatre’s relocation from its damaged Arts Centre home to The Shed, a converted grain store in Addington.

The theatre reopened in December 2011, becoming one of the city’s earliest major cultural organisations to resume operating after the earthquake and an important symbol of Christchurch’s recovery.

Aldridge was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2012 for his services to theatre.

Since taking charge of The Arts Centre, he has overseen the continued restoration and revitalisation of the historic precinct while advocating strongly for its future as a home for arts, culture, education and community life.

His tenure has included efforts to attract artists, businesses and visitors back to the restored buildings, while navigating the considerable financial challenges associated with maintaining the heritage site.

Ward said  “Out of respect for Philip and his family, The Arts Centre will not be commenting on personal medical matters.

“We ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

The Arts Centre board will announce interim leadership arrangements once they have been confirmed.
