A decade spent photographing dogs across five continents has led to a free exhibition opening in Christchurch next week.

Christchurch photographer Craig Turner-Bullock will bring 22 images from his fourth book, Dogs of the World, to the Arts Centre’s Pūmanawa gallery from October 19 to 24.

The project took him to 21 countries and features nearly 70 breeds, including New Zealand huntaways and heading dogs.

“I am fascinated by the diversity of dog breeds and their purpose,” Turner-Bullock said.

“I enjoy a little bit of history and I love to travel, so this was the ultimate project to allow me to do all those things at once.”

Known locally for his books Quake Dogs and Quake Cats, Turner-Bullock was named the 2026 New Zealand Professional Animal Photographer of the Year at the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Awards.

He also won International Documentary Photographer of the Year and International Narrative Photographer of the Year at the Australian Photographic Prize.

The Christchurch exhibition follows the book’s release in July and will include two large “dogoramas”, alongside a screening of a documentary about the making of the project.

The panoramic technique has become a signature of Turner-Bullock’s work, but began as a solution to a difficult photography location.

“Tallulah, the French bulldog at the Louvre in Paris, is a good example. I just couldn’t find my angles or the right lens, so I thought about a technique I’d used for photographing landscapes: panoramas.

“I captured the central image of Tallulah and shot several images of the landscape around her to extend the frame.”

Tallulah appears on the book’s cover and in the Louvre panorama being exhibited. She has since died, giving the photograph added significance.

“I hope that her being in the book and on the cover is a good tribute to her,” Turner-Bullock said.

Closer to home, the project also celebrates New Zealand’s working dogs.

“You haven’t heard a dog bark until you’ve heard the bellowing of a huntaway at work resonating through your chest,” he said.

Originally from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, Turner-Bullock lives in Christchurch with his husband, their affenpinschers Ralph and Holly, and a Ragdoll cat named Mr Tinkles.

Dogs of the World opens at 1pm on Monday, October 19. It will then be open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 24.

Entry is free, and copies of the book will be available to buy at the exhibition.

The exhibition will travel to Fujifilm New Zealand’s House of Photography in Rosedale, Auckland, in early 2027.
