A police operation has been taking place in the Christchurch suburb of Wainoni tonight.

Police were called to a Shortland Street address just before 9pm.

Chris Lynch Media understands a woman has been seriously injured after reportedly being shot.

Local residents said Shortland Street had been blocked off at both ends by police, and one property had been surrounded by officers, including armed staff.

A local resident said cordons were still in place at 10.15PM, but the cordon had been reduced.
