Approximately 140 personnel are battling the large fire in the Mackenzie region, with fire fighting operations supported by a team of 25 in the Incident Management Team.

A Mackenzie District Council spokesman says the wind is strong but within tolerance for the aircrews who are doing an incredible job.

“Work towards today’s objectives is progressing well: to improve protection around buildings and structures, and to begin containing the perimeter.”

SH8 is open; SH80 remains closed.

He said there is less smoke drifting than there was yesterday.

Keeping windows and doors closed will help limit the effect.

He said if residents are having trouble breathing or have an underlying condition and have concerns about smoke inhalation, please contact a medical professional.

TWIZEL VOLUNTEER FIRE STATION INUNDATED WITH KINDNESS

Keri Jackson from the Twizel Volunteer Fire-station said they have been so grateful for the food donations received to the local fire station.

On a Facebook post Ms Jackson asked that food donations and any other item donations cease immediately “as we are now overwhelmed.”

“Again thank you so very much. Big shoutout to the local business’ – Poppies Cafe, the Bakery, Mackenzie four square – just to name a few – for filling our belly’s last night. “

Ms Jackson said “we appreciate your visits to our station we are still currently in COVID 19 Alert level 2. “

“The station is closed to all but operational personal. Again for us to ensure our crews can come in to a safe environment.”

“The duration of this event could go for 10-14 days and we will reach out if we are needing anything urgently through the proper channels.”
