Police can now name the child who died in a crash in Amberley.

He was Jurael Tutere Paul Jeffrey Bennett, aged 7, from Christchurch.

A vehicle was overwhelmed by water after it got stuck in the Waipara River, off Double Corner Rd, in Amberley at around 5.35pm on Sunday.

Jurael had been four-wheel driving with mum and her partner.

A police spokesperson confirmed Jurael Tutere Paul Jeffrey Bennett, aged 7, from Christchurch died at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with Jurael’s whānau at this extremely difficult time.”

Nicola Reid from Elite Fight Complex in Phillipstown said he Jurael was a member of her gym.

“Jurael was a bubbly, outgoing and valued member of our kickboxing gym.”

“His smile lit up a room He will be greatly missed.”

A Spokesperson for Elite Boxing Club said “words cannot express our deepest sadness hearing this news , this little man is a legend at our gym, our deepest condolences from everyone at Elite Boxing Club.”

Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.
